Simulator sickness occurs when there is a mismatch between the signals that a user's brain receives from what they see, as compared to the physical motion that their body is experiencing during a VR experience. It is can be physically uncomfortable and also breaks the sense of immersion for the users.

VR developers can prevent simulator sickness in virtual reality by incorporating tips and tricks such as:

  • Using appropriate movement mechanics
  • Maintaining high frame rates (60 FPS for mobile VR & 90 FPS for desktop VR)
  • Using baked lighting instead of real-time lighting without shadows
  • Maintaining the number of Tris and Verts (50 to 100,000 for mobile VR & less than 1 to 2 million for desktop VR)
  • Reducing both Draw and SetPass Calls
  • Using low poly models instead of high poly models
  • Using Frame Debugger & Profiler
  • Conducting User Testing
