516 - What You Need To Know About Social VR Experiences
Virtual reality is an amazing technology that enables us to immerse ourselves in experiences like never before. One of the terms that you hear often when the level of immersion is described is “presence”, as the experience can truly make you feel like you are existing in the virtual world, interacting with places, objects, and people as if they existed in the real world. But virtual reality experiences are increasingly involving multiple people; what happens when the virtual people you encounter in VR are actually real people?
In this session we will explore the critical questions that must be considered when building social VR experiences. You will define different types of social VR and examine scenarios in which each could be applied. You will look at some of the existing social VR platforms that exist today and what has been learned from those experiences. You will also look at research that is being done on social VR, and early attempts to place code-of-conduct-like guidelines for how people should behave in social VR experiences.
