214 - BYOD: SketchFabulous! Use SketchFab to Quickly Prototype an Awesome VR Experience

March 31, 2020
The Rosen Centre
Virtual Reality

Virtual reality is a fantastic way to engage learners in an immersive experience, yet many professionals find themselves wondering: How can I create a VR proof-of-concept when I don't (yet) have the technical skills to use Unity or Unreal? Or: What if my audience uses different types of VR viewers—how do I target them all?

What if there was a way to create your first VR experience, a prototype to showcase for others on any VR device or even with browser only, without the steep learning curve of a high-end game engine? In this session, you'll learn how to use SketchFab, a FREE online platform, to create, showcase, and test your first VR experience, viewable in browser or any VR device. SketchFab makes it easy to create and implement a simple VR immersive experience. Using a simple, pre-built 3D object obtained from available online repositories such as Turbosquid, you'll upload a 3D model to SketchFab, add additional interactivity, and create for your first VR experience! Additionally, you'll see how to easily embed this VR view in any website, webpage, or even eLearning content to showcase your newly created VR experience to peers, stakeholders, and learners.

In this session, you will learn:

  • How to use SketchFab to create your first VR experience
  • The basics of 3D models (ex., texture, lighting, material, etc.)
  • How SketchFab displays 3D content on browsers and VR viewers
  • The basics of WebGL and WebVR
  • Where to obtain and use ready-made 3D models online
  • How to quickly embed the SketchFab view into other webpages

Audience:
Designers, developers

Technology discussed:
VR, 3D models, textures, lighting, VR perspective, WebGL, WebVR, SketchFab, HTML5, VR enabled browsers

Participant technology requirements:
Laptop with network connection and updated graphics card. 3 button mouse, if available. Participants are highly encouraged to bring VR viewers of any type to view and test their VR experience.
